Have you ever read a suspense story that included a character dealing with infertility? As someone who has been through that journey and written my own stories dealing with it, it definitely intrigues me! My husband I have been married for 26 years and have two kids. Even though I planned to teach professionally, I never would have guessed I would end up being a homeschool mom. More importantly, for a long time, I didn’t think I would be a mom—period.
As someone with endometriosis, I know what it’s like to experience infertility, and so I wove the topic into my suspense story, Hold for Release. In the novel, the heroine, Carlotta Hartman, desperately would like to be a mother.
One thing I changed in the novel (*spoiler alert*) was the outcome of my infertility journey compared to my heroine’s. Not everyone has the same story, and I wanted to honor that. Some women get pregnant eventually. Some adopt. Some choose to remain childless. God loves each and every one.
Many novels feature single characters, so this was my first attempt to write a suspense story involving a couple whose marriage is on the rocks.
Another detail from real life I included was setting the story in Cincinnati. For ten years, my husband and I lived in the greater Cincinnati area, and we visit the Queen City yearly—usually making a stop at the Cincinnati Museum Center.
Also, Carlotta has a green thumb, and I enjoy gardening when I have the time. Additionally, Carlotta is a Jane Austen fan, as am I. Carlotta names her plants after Pride and Prejudice characters.
Hold for Release is a suspense involving journalist Jake Hartman, who must save his marriage and stop a psychopath before it’s too late. It’s a stand-alone novel, published by Pelican Book Group. The book is available for sale through Amazon and is also available through Kindle Unlimited and Hoopla.
Carlotta Hartman’s life is falling apart.
Although Carlotta desperately wants a child, her journalist husband wishes their marriage would go back to the way things used to be before infertility treatments took over their schedule. While volunteering at an animal shelter to fill the void, Carlotta stumbles upon dead animals and a human body. Days later, Jake confesses to an affair. Hurt and confused, Carlotta moves in with her sister.
And then things go from bad to perilous.
As Jake receives counsel from a pastor, he pledges to woo Carlotta again and piece together their shattered marriage. But as Carlotta rushes out of Jake’s arms, she runs straight into danger. Like the articles Jake writes and holds for release, a psychopath, bent on revenge, vows to hang onto Carlotta until the time is right.
In the end, a past secret threatens to kill all hopes of a happy future.
